Lumerical’s Photonic Inverse Design Reduces CompoundTek’s Silicon Photonics Grating Coupler Footprint by 20X

Design Cycle Time to Tape Out Reduced to Two Weeks

Singapore, and Vancouver, BC, 8 November 2019 – CompoundTek, a global foundry services leader in emerging silicon photonic solutions (SiPh), today announces the tapeout of a reduced footprint grating coupler for photonic I/O. The grating couplers were designed and optimised using photonic inverse design (PID) in conjunction with Lumerical’s industry leading FDTD nanophotonic simulator. Lumerical’s PID capability enables photonic designers to rapidly develop entirely new functionality with improved performance, reduced footprint, and more robust manufacturability.

“With this successful tapeout in partnership with Lumerical, customers will be able to access Lumerical’s PID solution with confidence when taping-out to CompoundTek in the future. The integration into our design flow, design partners and open SiPh manufacturing platform ecosystem will accelerate the adoption of SiPh solutions for various applications ranging from datacom transceivers, smart sensor, bio-medical, automotive LiDAR, quantum computing and artificial intelligence,” said KS Ang, Chief Operating Officer, CompoundTek.

The SiPh grating coupler is a key functional block for photonic I/O, enabling light to be coupled from fibre into and out of a photonic integrated circuit. Unlike end-fire edge couplers, grating couplers can be located anywhere on chip, enabling additional applications such as sense and test. With this flexibility comes the requirement for reduced footprint while maintaining high coupling efficiency. However, with over 100 design parameters, grating couplers are geometrically complex, rendering traditional optimisation techniques impractical. Lumerical’s PID technology enables designers to automatically and reliably generate optimal grating couplers with hundreds of free parameters. Testimony to its effectiveness, CompoundTek’s SiPh new grating couplers have been reduced in size by 20x and promise improved coupling efficiency.

“These new grating couplers will enable our customers to create improved commercial designs with higher yields and faster time to market,” said Lumerical CTO, James Pond. “PID’s powerful optimisation algorithms leverage adjoint sensitivity analysis to explore design spaces that are impractical by other means. Coupled with Lumerical’s industry leading FDTD solver, PID enables designers to efficiently explore and optimise designs with hundreds or more design parameters. In contrast, traditional design approaches are limited to a small number of established device designs, exploring much smaller parameter spaces, typically fewer than ten parameters.”

CompoundTek announces plan to establish state-of-the-art silicon photonics testing services hub in Singapore

Singapore, 23 Aug 2019 – CompoundTek continues to advance Singapore’s global footprint in niche semiconductor capabilities as it moves into the final stages of formalising its plans to build a new state-of-the-art silicon photonics testing services hub. In collaboration with select government partners, the facility will centre on SiPh on-wafer testing, housing state-of-the-art equipment, instrument controls and test methodologies that are custom-built by CompoundTek and its technology partners.

Catering to the development of solutions that revolutionises data-transmission capabilities sought after in data centres, interconnectivity, Lidar, smart sensors and other high-growth applications; the testing hub is poised to serve the explosive volume production expected in the next five years. It aims to strengthen Singapore’s designing and commercialisation capabilities while driving the public-private partnership agenda within the industry.

Designed to achieve fast and reproducible optical coupling, including 6-axis probe-position optimisation and polarisation alignment; wafer probing for conventional DC and RF electrical testing in the optical domain; and supports both O and C-band; the facility will enable test of electro-optical components up to 67GHz and is ideally suited for electro-optical components for 400Gbit/s or higher.

With added on-wafer level automated Si photonics Optical/Electrical/RF testing facility, customers will be able to limit packaging costs to good dies (Known-Good-Die) only and avoid module packaging level testing turn-around time losses. This complements CompoundTek’s current market solutions in mass production volume with fast cycle-time, offered alongside world-class commercial foundry capabilities that accelerates time-to-market to achieve customers’ commercialisation goals.

The facility, manned by the company’s technical experts, will combine CompoundTek’s existing capabilities in SiPh commercialisation of technologies and its partnerships with global renowned research institutes.

More details on this exciting expansion, to follow.

CompoundTek and Luceda Photonics release PDK for the IPKISS integrated photonics design platform

Singapore, 22 Aug – CompoundTek, a global foundry services leader in emerging silicon photonic (SiPh) solutions recently partnered with Luceda Photonics, a leader in integrated photonics design automation. Together they will expand CompoundTek’s silicon photonics Process Design Kit (PDK) offering to enable Luceda’s IPKISS platform for a global commercial customer base.

Photonic IC technology is maturing fast with designers needing PDKs as the foundation of their design flow. Providing a reliable and scalable design flow, the PDKs additionally facilitate knowledge transfer between foundries and designers on layout and simulation models. The IPKISS platform combines layout, smart physical simulation and circuit level design and simulation, in one single quality-controlled PDK. The PDK can be used from IPKISS.flow, and from IPKISS.eda integrated in the Siemens / Tanner flow, enabling customers to make significant strides forward in creating design flows that are more reliable and scalable.

Pivotal to the consolidation of knowledge in the context of a fast-moving industry, the IPKISS platform is instrumental to producing a scripting environment that covers the complete photonic IC design flow up to measurement feedback for true component validation. This is suited for niche solutions spanning interconnectivity, datacom transceivers, bio-sensing, smart sensors, LiDAR, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence.

The IPKISS platform offering is in line with CompoundTek’s vision in driving the adoption of niche SiPh-based applications and in facilitating the commercialisation goals of its global customer base.
